India Wants To Develop Ties With China 'Once Again'
Goyal said India will rebuild ties with China if the relationship stays fair and stable, while bilateral trade with the United States remains strong.
- On Wednesday, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said India is open to business with China if terms are fair and geopolitical conditions remain stable, though "the last word has not yet been scripted" on rebuilding bilateral relations.
- Recalling the Covid-19 pandemic, Goyal said India was "let down miserably by all countries" regarding essential supplies, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to call for Atmanirbhar Bharat to build domestic manufacturing capabilities.
- Bilateral trade between India and China rose 7.9 per cent to USD 127.7 billion in 2025-26, though the trade deficit widened to USD 99.19 billion, while India secured agreements with 38 developed nations covering economies worth around $70 trillion.
- The United States remains India's largest trading partner, a relationship Goyal described as "substantive and consequential," while Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong confirmed collaboration on semiconductor manufacturing and workforce training.
- Addressing geopolitical challenges, Goyal stated "Everybody has recognised the importance of friends" in coming years, emphasizing that India rejects isolation in favor of trusted international partnerships to balance self-sufficiency with global efficiency.
