Port Authority Introduces New Performance Index and Digital Reforms

The index will benchmark port operations and the new digital tools will streamline grievances, registration and medical certifications for seafarers.

  • On Thursday, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal launched the Logistics Port Performance Index and four digital maritime initiatives during the 37th Foundation Day celebrations of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority in Mumbai.
  • The LPPI, developed under the Sagar Aankalan framework, serves as a national benchmarking mechanism designed to improve operational performance and strengthen India's position in global logistics aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
  • Alongside the index, the Directorate General of Shipping introduced four digital modules including a 24x7 Grievance Redressal Module, Ship Registration Module, Medical Practitioner Module, and Unified Ship Recycling Credit Note Module to streamline maritime service delivery.
  • Sonowal emphasized the grievance redressal mechanism as "a critical welfare and protection framework," reflecting India's commitment to the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, which protects seafarers working far from home.
  • JNPA stands as a symbol of India's growing economic strength, having crossed 8 million TEUs and handled more than 102 million metric tonnes of cargo during FY 2025-26, supporting the vision of becoming a global maritime powerhouse.
