India to Lead Kimberley Process: A Step Toward Conflict-Free Diamonds
India will lead the Kimberley Process in 2026, overseeing over 99% of the global rough diamond trade to enhance transparency and consumer trust in conflict-free diamonds.
- On Thursday, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry confirmed India will assume the Kimberley Process Chair from January 1, 2026, after serving as Vice Chair from December 25, 2025.
- The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, created January 1, 2003, is a tripartite initiative of governments, the international diamond industry and civil society to prevent trade in `conflict diamonds`; it currently counts 60 participants, with the European Union as a single participant.
- As KP Chair in 2026, India will prioritise strengthening governance, advancing digital certification and traceability, and enhancing transparency through data-driven monitoring.
- Officials framed the appointment as a reaffirmation of India's role in global diamond governance through reform and consensus, with Goyal welcoming the decision as a sign of trust in Modi's trade commitments.
- This will be the third time India has led the KP, with the forum's 60 participants and the European Union counted as one, highlighting India’s recurring governance role.
