India standardises names of 28 Ladakh locations, draws Chinese protest

India said the names will improve official mapping and public awareness as China called the move illegal and invalid.

  • On Tuesday, India firmly rejected China's objections to its decision to assign standardized names to 28 locations and geographical features in Ladakh, reiterating that the Union Territory is an integral and inalienable part of the country.
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs announced the standardized names on October 2 to facilitate accurate recognition and public awareness, a process conducted in consultation with the Union Territory of Ladakh administration and local stakeholders.
  • These 28 strategic sites include vital frontier friction points along the Line of Actual Control, such as Gogra and Hot Spring, which were significant locations during the 2020 military standoff between Indian and Chinese troops.
  • China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning opposed the move, calling it "illegal and invalid" while claiming that relevant areas in the western sector of the China-India boundary have always belonged to China.
  • Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal dismissed the objections as baseless, stating that "no amount of denial by the Chinese side can change this established fact" regarding Ladakh's status as integral to India.
