India Welcomes Key Outcomes at COP30, Hopes Promises Made 33 Years Ago in Rio Get Fulfilled
India welcomed COP30's Just Transition Mechanism but highlighted missing fossil fuel phase-out plans and urged developed countries to meet climate finance commitments.
- On November 23, India's Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change expressed strong support to Brazil for the inclusive leadership of the COP30 Presidency and welcomed several decisions at the just-concluded summit in Belem.
- Earlier this month, negotiators from 194 countries met in Belem, Brazilian Amazon, from November 10 to 21, extending talks after a massive fire at the main venue on November 20 injured 27 people.
- Among outcomes welcomed was the establishment of the Just Transition Mechanism, support for focusing on Article 9.1 of the Paris Agreement, and progress under the Global Goal on Adaptation, with the Ministry saying it "reflects a recognition of the overwhelming need for adaptation in developing countries."
- India also flagged gaps, noting the COP30 draft text did not include a roadmap for phasing out fossil fuels, emphasising developed-country climate finance obligations, and warning that unilateral trade-restrictive climate measures violate equity and CBDR‑RC principles.
- Looking ahead, New Delhi reaffirmed its commitment to work with all Parties, urged greater support for vulnerable populations in the global South, and hopes Rio, 33 years ago, promises will be fulfilled.
