India Cybercrime Agency Warns Financial Firms on AI Attacks

  • The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team warned banks and fintech firms about cyberattacks using AI agents that enable hackers to compromise systems and execute fraudulent transactions at machine speed.
  • Two 'Critical' advisories issued in October underpin the warning: CIAD-2026-0046 addressed unauthorized API fund transfers, while CIAD-2026-0049 identified AI agents as a primary attack vector.
  • Attackers exploit unpatched software to access infrastructure, specifically targeting automated disbursement APIs; hackers then transfer stolen funds to 'mule' accounts across different banks, quickly moving or withdrawing money via IMPS or NEFT.
  • Financial entities must report cyber incidents to CERT-In within six hours; additionally, banks and NBFCs are required to report incidents to the Reserve Bank of India via its DAKSH portal within the same timeframe.
  • Agencies urged institutions to maintain complete digital interface inventories and perform secure architecture reviews, while recommending firms run authorized red-team exercises to simulate machine-speed attacks and strengthen their security operations centers.
