India and Germany sign deals to deepen economic and security ties

India and Germany finalized 19 agreements to boost defence, trade, technology, and skills mobility, including a $5.2 billion submarine deal, during Chancellor Merz's visit.

  • On January 12, Chancellor Friedrich Merz met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad, and the two signed multiple agreements in Gandhinagar to boost defence, skills, health and education cooperation.
  • With bilateral trade at $33.40 billion in 2024, Merz urged concluding the EU-India FTA, saying `To tap into the full potential of India-Germany economic relations, we need to conclude the negotiations on a free trade agreement between India and the European Union`.
  • Officials discussed a potential $5.2 billion Type-214 submarine deal and Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems plans to build six vessels costing $8 billion in India.
  • Both sides framed the signings as moves to lift their $50 billion trade ties, with Merz saying closer defence ties will cut India’s reliance on Russia and open co-production paths.
  • Positioned ahead of an India-EU summit later this month, Merz will wrap up his visit with a trip to Bengaluru on Tuesday, as EU leaders will be in New Delhi on January 26, with plans for healthcare recruitment and mobility discussed.
