'Incorrigible fraudster' who swindled more than £100,000 from clients jailed
Marianne Smyth was sentenced to over three years after defrauding clients of £135,000 by abusing her mortgage adviser role between 2008 and 2010.
- On Friday at Downpatrick Crown Court, Marianne Smyth, 56, was sentenced to four years, reduced to three years and four months, after swindling more than £100,000 in Northern Ireland.
- Between 2008 and 2010, Smyth exploited her role as a mortgage adviser to earn trust, socialise with clients, and promise investments, stealing over 72,000 from one couple, 23,000 from another, and 20,000 from a third.
- After victims reported her, Smyth was arrested in the US in February 2024 and extradited to Northern Ireland, where she was convicted of theft and fraud in September.
- She is to serve half her sentence in custody and face deportation; a victim who lost her home said, `I lost my house as well, with two young children at that time.`
- Detective Constable Mark Anderson said the case involved cross-border investigation supported by law enforcement partners in the United States, and police urged victims to call the 101 helpline or report online.
