Returnees from the Ukrainian battlefield have murdered at least 240 people, including children, in Russia over the past three years. Russian judges, however, consider the defendants' participation in the war a mitigating circumstance in these cases. Many of the murderers are almost immediately released on parole in exchange for reenlisting in the Russian army.
