French Teaching Unions Call Strike over 'Unacceptable' Heat
French teaching unions have called a strike citing risks to staff and pupils' health and poor working conditions due to heat.
Unions reported increased incidents of fainting, more visits to school infirmaries and emergency services, and a rise in workplace health and safety complaints over the past 48 hours.
They criticized a lack of preparation for heat waves and government inaction, leading them to file strike notices.
Most French schools lack air conditioning, which has contributed to around 3,500 school closures during the heatwave.
Seven unions are alarming their working conditions in the midst of extreme heat and denouncing the fact that "the health of staff, students and their working conditions are at risk".
"The health of staff, students and their working conditions are at risk", alarmed in a joint communiqué several trade unions, which point to the "responsibility" of the Minister of National Education.
