Cruise Residents Left Stranded
The company said it was seeking to restructure and recapitalize after operating losses and fuel costs made the voyage unsustainable.
On Tuesday, cruise operator Villa Vie Residences announced it was suspending operations and disembarking all passengers in the port city of Sihanouedia, Cambodia.
Rising fuel costs triggered unsustainable operating losses, forcing the company to seek 2 forms of relief: urgent financial restructuring and recapitalization. These costs have made operations prohibitively expensive.
Passengers, including those who had sold their homes and cars to finance the voyage, now face severe uncertainty regarding their personal belongings and accommodations.
While the operator explores potential financial deals, the ship remains docked in Cambodia, where the company attempts to support affected travelers.
Management admitted being 'quite humbled by the scale' of reactivating the vessel from a long-term layup, and future operations remain uncertain as the firm attempts to secure the necessary capital.
