Between 1942 and 1953, the Hooker Electrochemical Company buried 21,000 tons of hazardous chemical waste in an abandoned canal in Niagara Falls. A primary school and hundreds of housing units were then built just a few metres from this toxic landfill, leading to one of the largest environmental scandals in the United States.
