European Powers Rally Behind Ukraine After Trump Lashes Out at Zelensky
- On Monday, Zelenskiy and European leaders at 10 Downing Street discussed finalising a peace plan focused on security guarantees for Ukraine, with no territorial compromise reached with Washington.
- The revision began with the original 28-point US peace plan being pared down to a 20-point revised plan, and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy said `We have no right to give anything away` as advisers expect it by Tuesday evening.
- European leaders raised financial pressure on Moscow by advancing asset plans as Downing Street declared `positive progress` and Britain signalled it may use about 8 billion of frozen Russian sovereign assets.
- Despite progress, no deal emerged on territory with the Americans, and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the strongest guarantees would be legally binding if voted through the US Congress, which appears open to that route.
- Ursula von der Leyen joined follow-up calls as Keir Starmer prepares to update Mr Zelenskiy, while Friedrich Merz reported Belgium's opposition after meeting Bart De Wever, who will meet Mr Starmer on Friday.
