Imran Khan supporters to march on Islamabad to demand his release
PTI says the march will press for a meeting with Imran Khan after negotiations collapsed over access, medical care and other demands.
On Sunday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf confirmed its long march to Islamabad will proceed after negotiations with the government collapsed early Sunday following a deadlock in the second round of talks.
Negotiations stalled because the government demanded the protest be canceled first, while PTI insisted on meeting jailed founder Imran Khan and securing access to his personal physician before deciding on the march.
Protesters seek Khan's release, hospital transfer, and family visit permissions; the march begins Sunday in Lakki Marwat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa , with supporters from across the province joining the convoy along the route.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's adviser Rana Sanaullah warned that "No one would be allowed to enter Islamabad," as shipping containers now block key approaches to the capital to contain the movement.
Imprisoned since 2023 on corruption charges, Khan remains the central figure in the standoff; the government accused PTI of sympathizing with the Pakistani Taliban, and past protests by his supporters have occasionally turned violent.
After the failure of negotiations started on Friday 2 October with the authorities, the PTI, the main opposition force in Pakistan, launched today a major march in support of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, imprisoned since 2023. While the former Prime Minister is regularly presented by the authorities as a threat to national security, his popularity seems to remain intact to a large part of the population.
