Sweets become more expensive: import prices are rising as much as they have not been for two years

Goods imported to Germany from all over the world have recently cost significantly more. Food was particularly expensive. Statisticians have found out why.

Prices for imports have increased as much in February as they have not been for a long time. Food and electricity received from abroad are particularly affected. Contrary to recent forecasts, inflation is continuing in the current year.

Import prices in Germany were 3.6 percent higher in February than in the same month of the previous year. This was the strongest increase over the previous year since January 2023 (+5.3 percent compared to January 2022), the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) announced on Monday. Import prices were 3.6% higher in February 2025 than in February 2024. This was the strongest year-on-year increase since January 2023 (+5.3% compared to January 2022). In January 2025, the year-on-year change rate was +3.1%, and in December 2024, it was +2.0%. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), import prices rose by 0.3% in February 2025 compared to January 2025.
