Imo NYSC Abduction: Police Locate Kidnappers' Camp, Say Location Mined With IEDs
Police said drones located the camp where the victims were held, but explosives slowed the rescue before all 20 were freed.
Twenty prospective National Youth Service Corps members abducted while traveling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in the South-East have been released exactly one week after their kidnapping.
Military personnel and police operatives conducted the rescue operation in Imo State, Nigeria, with officers reporting that 10 individuals were rescued directly at the scene following security intervention.
The Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, confirmed the rescue in a telephone conversation with The Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, on Wednesday.
Security sources confirmed the rescued victims were transported to the State Security Service hospital in Owerri, Imo State, for medical treatment; one civilian was also released.
The kidnapped individuals had been traveling from Ibadan to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when abducted during their journey from Oyo State.
Nigerian authorities have safely rescued 20 recent graduates who were kidnapped by gunmen last week, following a large-scale search and rescue operation.
