IMF chief warns energy shock, growing debt and AI risks threaten global growth
Kristalina Georgieva said AI spending is raising inflation and widening inequality, while high debt and energy shocks are squeezing growth, the IMF said.

- Global public debt is near its highest level since World War II and on track to soon exceed 100% of GDP, with advanced economies the "worst offenders," Georgieva said, while the AI-related building boom is inflationary.
- Finance ministers of 191 IMF-World Bank member countries will gather in Bangkok next week to assess global stability, as Georgieva noted AI-related benefits are "highly uneven across the world" and threaten to widen economic inequality.
- Urging policymakers to avoid delaying action, Georgieva stated, "Now may be a good time for a prudently hawkish bias in many countries' monetary policy," as fiscal space is "crying out for replenishment."
- Citing Amara's Law, Georgieva said the world is traversing a critical transition between today's AI-related building boom and tomorrow's AI-related benefits, representing the period of maximum risk as triple forces challenge growth this decade.
