Former Turkish Parliament speakers urge release of jailed İstanbul mayor - Turkish Minute

Three former speakers of Turkey’s parliament have issued a joint statement calling for the release of İstanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, the opposition’s presidential candidate who was arrested in March on corruption charges widely seen as politically motivated, the Birgün daily reported.

Former TBMM Speakers Hüsamettin Cindoruk, Hikmet Çetin, Mustafa Kalemli and Cahit Karakaş issued a statement calling for Ekrem İmamoğlu to be tried without arrest.

It was claimed that some AKP deputies who were disturbed by the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu held a meeting and discussed their discomfort with the issue.
