Illegal migrant worker crackdown sees record numbers of raids and arrests

Since July 2024, immigration raids on UK businesses increased 77%, resulting in 12,300 arrests to deter illegal working and enforce border controls, government data shows.

  • New figures show the Home Office recorded 17,483 visits and 12,322 arrests between July 2024 and December last year, marking the highest numbers since 2019 with raids up 77% and arrests up 83% under the Labour government.
  • Immigration Enforcement, backed by new equipment and rules, received a £5 million funding boost, with officers wearing body-worn cameras since September and tighter right-to-work checks under the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act supported the crackdown.
  • Among specific raids, immigration officers visited Caldicot packaging and distribution warehouses, resulting in three arrests of Chinese nationals and four detained for removal, on August 5.
  • Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said `There is no place for illegal working in our communities`, with 1,726 people returned last year and employers facing up to five years in prison and £60,000 fines per illegal worker.
  • Eddy Montgomery said enforcement will continue with no hiding place into 2026, the government plans mandatory Digital ID by 2029, and Chris Philp warned `illegal working is booming because Labour have turned Britain into a soft touch`.
