Rockin’ the House? ‘Boulder-House’ Construction Approved
The passivhaus-style home includes large irregular windows, a courtyard and a pool, and planners said it meets the green belt exception rule.
The Planning Inspectorate approved construction of Fomorian, a contemporary house designed to resemble rock formations on Ilkley Moor, following a successful appeal by the developers.
Bradford Council failed to determine the initial application within the required timeframe, while Ilkley Town Council had recommended refusal, calling the design a "visual anomaly to the moorland."
Harrogate-Based architects Shaw & Jagger secured approval through the country house clause for buildings of "exceptional quality," with the home built to ultra-low energy Passivhaus standards.
Architect Matt Masserella-Gill designed the scheme for landowner David Rasche, stating it is "intrinsically linked to the spirit of its place" and inspired by local folklore and Calf Rocks.
The site sits within the South Pennine Moors Site and National Nature Reserve, positioned near the Swastika Stone, a prehistoric carving and one of hundreds of Scheduled Ancient Monuments on the moor.
