Ig Nobel Ceremony Relocates to Zurich Over US Visa Concerns
The Ig Nobel awards will alternate between Zurich and other European cities due to U.S. visa and travel safety issues, with four of last year's winners skipping the U.S. event.
- On Monday, the Annals of Improbable Research announced the 36th annual Ig Nobel ceremony will be held in Zurich, marking the first move from the United States to Europe.
- Citing recent visa and safety problems, organizers said 'it has become unsafe for our guests to visit the country' during the past year, preventing asking winners or international journalists to travel to the USA this year.
- Swiss institutions will co-produce the event, which will be held in Zurich every other year and shift to other European cities in between, Abrahams said.
- The move ends 35 years of U.S. hosting, and organizers said there are no immediate plans to return the ceremony to the United States, while four winners last year chose not to travel to Boston.
- Milo Puhan, epidemiologist at the University of Zurich and Swiss Ig Nobel winner in 2017, welcomed the ceremony and noted examples of winning research like painted cows, lizard pizza preferences, alcohol aiding language, and fingernail growth.
