IPL Star Sets New Condition for Retention: Pay Rs 40 Crore or Be Released for the Auction, Who Is He?
At least two players have asked for INR 40 crore to stay with their teams, a demand that could strain franchise budgets before the auction.
- IPL franchises face a potential retention battle as some of the league's biggest names reportedly seek contracts worth INR 40 crore to continue with their current teams.
- Notably, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant declined retention during the 2025 mega auction; both subsequently attracted substantial bids, with Iyer securing INR 26.75 crore and Pant earning INR 27 crore.
- A single INR 40 crore contract would consume more than 25 per cent of a franchise's projected purse, complicating efforts to retain multiple established players simultaneously.
- For the 2027 season, the IPL purse stands at INR 130 crore, with projections showing an increase to approximately INR 150 crore in the following cycle.
- During the previous mega auction, the BCCI prescribed retention slabs of INR 18 crore, INR 14 crore and INR 11 crore, while an RTM card alternative also emerged.
