‘I’d wake up at 3am checking the clock’: NHS doctor reveals training sleep struggle
Simba research found 71% of Brits sleep less than the NHS-recommended amount as Charlotte Nichols says shift work and training hurt recovery.
NHS doctor Charlotte Nichols, from Oxford, reports that rotating shift patterns disrupt her sleep and exercise routines, making it difficult to maintain consistent physical performance.
Rotating shift schedules ranging from 8am starts to night shifts force Charlotte to constantly adapt her training, often leading to inconsistent recovery and physical exhaustion.
According to sleep technology brand Simba, 71 per cent of Brits get insufficient sleep, while 68 per cent experience pre-event anxiety, mirroring Charlotte's observations on training-related stress.
Lack of sleep affects motivation and pace, with the doctor noting she is more likely to walk or sustain muscle strains when cramming training around stressful hospital shifts.
Charlotte incorporates nature walks and consistent routines to mitigate stress, emphasizing that individuals must identify personalized strategies to improve sleep quality despite busy schedules.
