Iconic Antique Barn in Chemainus closes

Kevin Smith closed the Antique Barn in Chemainus at the end of April 2025 after his six‑year lease ended and rent increased significantly.
Smith said the rent hike was unaffordable despite the business nearly tripling in size since he took over from Vaughn Ford in 2019.
The Antique Barn operated for nearly 20 years at 9347B Trans-Canada Highway, a local landmark hosting more than 20 vendors and attracting tourists.
Smith provided complimentary storage and relocation assistance to the vendors in appreciation of their backing, and he intends to reopen the business once a new site is secured.
Building owner Jim Shockey is preparing the site with upgrades including a new roof and major clean-up while the property’s future remains uncertain.
