Ice Hockey-Norway Will Not Play Russia at 2027 Worlds, National Association Says
The Norwegian Ice Hockey Association cited safety concerns and war-related tensions after a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling on Russia's return.
On Tuesday, Norway joined Finland in pledging to boycott games against Russia at the men's ice hockey world championship, deepening a rift in the sport.
Last week's ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport ordered the International Ice Hockey Federation to reinstate Russian teams, beginning with next month's world juniors in Canada.
Citing 'significant security risks' amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Norwegian Ice Hockey Association said its team would boycott only the men's championship in May and play other tournament games.
Finland is rallying other nations to join the boycott, while reports in Latvian media indicate Latvia could also refuse to face Russian teams in upcoming matches.
Germany considers withdrawing from hosting the men's world championship next year over security concerns, while Turku, Finland, threatened to stop co-hosting the world juniors if Russia participates, and The Czech government could bar Russian players from the women's under-18 championship.
