IIHF Bars Belarus From WJC, Men’s Worlds; Exploring Ways to Meet CAS Ruling on Russia
Belarusian teams remain out after the IIHF said the ruling protects tournament logistics and financial stability, with a possible appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
On Saturday, the International Ice Hockey Federation confirmed that Belarusian men's and under-20 national teams remain excluded from the 2027 World Championships, citing logistical and operational arrangements for the upcoming tournaments.
This determination follows the IIHF Disciplinary Board's ruling, which partially upheld an appeal filed by the Belarus Ice Hockey Association against the Council's decisions from July 27, 2026, though no legal grounds require immediate reinstatement.
Belarus Ice Hockey Association chairman Alexander Bogdanovich questioned the consistency of the approach, noting the governing body is exploring paths for Russia while excluding Belarus and may appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Separately, the IIHF is reviewing how to comply with a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling that overturned the 2022 ban on Russia, while exploring options for Russian participation despite maintaining opposition to the decision.
Potential readmission of Russian squads creates severe logistical and political complications for the 2027 tournament in Germany, with nations including Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland refusing to play against Russian teams.
