UK Regulator Upholds Suspension of ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan
Khan remains barred from practicing law as disciplinary proceedings continue and the ICC’s oversight body weighs whether to remove him from office.
On Tuesday, the Bar Standards Board upheld the interim suspension of International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim Khan, maintaining the ban while disciplinary proceedings continue regarding sexual misconduct allegations against the 56-year lawyer.
Khan, who denies any wrongdoing, faced an immediate suspension by the ICC in June following a complaint. Allegations of misconduct with a female aide have persisted for more than two years according to oversight reports.
Documents allege that on one foreign trip, Khan asked an aide to rest with him on a hotel bed and then "sexually touched her." Other allegations include locking his office door and nonconsensual behavior.
The board's ruling leaves Khan banned from legal practice in his home country as the Assembly of States Parties votes on his removal. The United Nations body will hold a special session on July 24 in New York.
Amid this crisis, President Donald Trump's administration has sanctioned the ICC over investigations into Israel and Afghanistan. Supporters suggest Khan has become a political target for seeking arrest warrants against Israeli officials regarding the war in Gaza.
