ICANN Reveals Bids for New Top-Level Domains
OpenAI, Meta and other tech firms are among 481 applicants seeking new web addresses as ICANN reviews 1,615 domain requests.
- The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers announced on Wednesday it received 1,615 applications for new generic top-level domains from 481 different applicants, marking the second round of such applications.
- While past initiatives allowed over 1,200 new GTLDs, this batch shows a marked shift toward brand-specific domains. The current round includes 345 brand applications ranging from.applebees to.zoom.
- Tech companies are heavily represented, with OpenAI requesting 15 GTLDs and Meta seeking 21. Both firms compete for AI-themed strings like.agent,.intelligence, and.superintelligence.
- When multiple parties apply for the same string, ICANN conducts a "community priority evaluation" to determine the most appropriate home. If that fails, rights go to auction.
- All applications must be decided by November 17, known as String Confirmation Day. Successful applicants will then establish registries, with readers likely able to register domains sometime next year.
