Konate Opens up on Depression After Deaths of Jota and Father
Konate said the losses left him unable to cope and urged players to speak up when depression takes hold.
In an interview with France Inter, Ibrahima Konate revealed he suffered from depression this past season, triggered by the tragic death of teammate Diogo Jota and the passing of his father, Hamady.
Jota died in a car crash in Spain last year while returning to Merseyside for pre-season training; Konate's father passed away in January after a long illness, compounding the defender's struggle.
Konate admitted keeping his struggles private, now urging others to speak up: "There are low points, there's depression. You can suffer from depression in football too; there's no need to be ashamed to say so."
Departing Liverpool at the end of this month after five years, Konate is expected to join Real Madrid on a free transfer after failing to agree on a new contract.
The revelations sparked significant conversation in France, occurring just eight days before the World Cup kicks off, as Konate prepares with the national team following his difficult final campaign for the Reds.
