English Heritage said Olivier first began acting there as a child and later helped shape British theatre and film.
- On Wednesday, Sir Ian McKellen unveiled a blue plaque at 22 Lupus Street in Pimlico, honoring the childhood home of Sir Laurence Olivier, widely regarded as one of Britain's greatest actors.
- Olivier resided at the property between the ages of 6 and 11, where he reportedly transformed a wooden box and blue curtains into a makeshift stage for hours of performance.
- Actress Ellen Terry recognized the 10-year-old's talent, declaring he was "already a great actor," before Olivier later gained fame for iconic Shakespearean roles and his 1944 film Henry V.
- English Heritage senior historian Howard Spencer said the plaque celebrates where Olivier found his voice as an actor, while noting he also championed the establishment of the National Theatre.
- The London blue plaque program began more than 150 years ago to commemorate notable residents; there are now more than 900 official plaques installed throughout the city.
