Dollar General Says 2,000 Items Will Actually Cost $1 or Less. What's Included?
The retailer says 2,000 items now cost $1 or less, including a new freezer door of $1 foods, as higher fuel prices draw budget shoppers.
Dollar General is expanding its selection of items priced at $1 or less, aiming to offer 2,000 such products as CEO Todd Vasos says this strategy appeals to core customers amid rising inflation.
Rising fuel prices and inflation have driven more shoppers to Dollar General, as consumers seek affordable alternatives; CEO Vasos noted that when gas prices sustain above $4, the company sees increased demand.
To attract shoppers, the retailer highlights 500 rotating items in a section dubbed 'Value Valley,' while many low-priced goods are placed at the back of stores to encourage walking past higher-priced brands.
In the most recent quarter ending May 1, this strategy helped push net sales 3% higher to $10.8 billion, while also attracting more affluent customers who are shopping at the chain more frequently.
With more than 21,000 locations in 48 states, the retailer plans to open 450 additional stores by year-end, though rival Dollar Tree has pursued a different pricing direction.
