Hellebuyck Says Family Circumstances Drove Request for Trade Out of Winnipeg
Next Tuesday, New Jersey Devils goaltender Connor Hellebuyck returns to Canada Life Centre to face the Winnipeg Jets for the first time since his October trade.
Citing 'very challenging circumstances' involving his family, Hellebuyck requested a trade from the Jets this summer, leading to his October 23 deal for a package including Dawson Mercer and Nico Daws.
Writing on Instagram Wednesday, the goaltender expressed gratitude for his 11 seasons in Winnipeg, stating, 'I understand those feelings, and I want everyone to know it was an extremely difficult decision.'
Since joining the Devils, Hellebuyck has posted a 3-0 record through three starts, maintaining a 1.95 goals-against average and a.900 save percentage.
A three-time Vezina Trophy winner and former league MVP, Hellebuyck spent 11 seasons with the Jets before his move to New Jersey. He remains in his 12th National Hockey League season.
