‘I couldn’t believe it’: Man attacked by bear in Mission, B.C.
Officers set a trap and trail cameras after the bear swatted the man’s arm and he escaped inside without serious injury.
On Monday morning in Mission, B.C., a man sustained non-life-threatening injuries after a black bear swatted his arm on his back porch, prompting an investigation by the Conservation Officer Service.
Gordon Gwyn, the homeowner, was alerted by his barking dog around 4 a.m.; despite his attempts to scare the bear away by shouting, the animal charged up the stairs toward him.
The Conservation Officer Service responded to the residence, though the bear had already fled; officers have since installed traps and trail cameras around the property to monitor for further activity.
This incident follows another black bear sighting last week in East Vancouver; officials remind residents that British Columbia is "bear country" and to carry bear spray and travel in groups.
As bears remain active this season, the Ministry of Environment and Parks urges residents to report wildlife conflicts to the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277 to help track potential threats.
