Hyundai to Recall over 421,000 US Vehicles over Software Brake Issue ...

Hyundai said front-camera software can trigger premature braking, and NHTSA reported 376 complaints, four crashes and four injuries.

  • On May 19, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that Hyundai is recalling 421,078 vehicles because front camera software may cause the forward collision avoidance system to "activate prematurely."
  • Between October 2024 and April 2026, Hyundai received 376 reports of vehicles braking unexpectedly, as the software issue causes the system to "apply the brakes when the driver isn" expecting it.
  • Four reports state that vehicle occupants were involved in crashes where they were rear-ended. While four injuries were reported, there have been no fatalities or confirmed fires.
  • Impacted models include 2025 to 2026 Hyundai Santa Cruz2025, Hyundai Tucson2025, Hyundai Tucson Hybrid2025, and Hyundai Tucson Plug-In HybridA. Owners will receive notification letters by July 17, with dealers updating camera software free of charge.
  • Consumers can search for vehicle identification numbers on NHTSA.gov to verify inclusion in the recall. Separately, Tesla is recalling over 14,000 vehicles due to a missing weight label that could lead to overloading.
