Husband receives life-saving kidney transplant from wife
- Kieran Hodgson, a 48-year-old from Barnsley, South Yorks, received a life-saving kidney transplant from his 42-year-old wife, Emma Hodgson, in February after being diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease and experiencing kidney function of just 15%.
- Kieran's polycystic kidney disease, a hereditary condition causing cysts to grow in the body, led to symptoms like numbness, fatigue, and an irregular heartbeat, ultimately requiring him to be placed on the deceased donor transplant list and be given information about the living kidney donor scheme.
- Emma secretly stole the forms from Kieran's car and applied to be tested as a donor, and following the successful transplant at Sheffield Kidney Institute, the couple booked a holiday to Whitby, North Yorks, while awaiting clearance for international travel.
- Expressing immense gratitude, Kieran stated, "Emma has given me the greatest gift that anyone can give someone," while Emma joked about now winning every argument and Kieran not being able to refuse her requests, including a new pair of Doc Marten shoes.
- The Hodgsons now appreciate life, with Emma stating, "It wasn't even a thought process – it was more of an instant reflex," and Caroline Basarab-Horwath from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust emphasizing that "Living donors are true heroes and it is a privilege to be part of their journey," while Emma is encouraging others to consider kidney donation.
