Hurricanes sign Nikishin to 1-year, $3M deal to end restricted free agent's contract stalemate
The Carolina Hurricanes signed defenseman Alexander Nikishin to a one-year, $3 million contract on Sunday, ending a contract stalemate with the restricted free agent who had sat out the season's start.
Prior to the agreement, Nikishin had been mentioned as a potential trade candidate while remaining absent from the team following his successful rookie campaign last year.
During the 2025-26 season, the 25-year-old skated in 81 games, posting an 11-22-33 performance that earned him a spot on the National Hockey League All-Rookie Team.
General Manager Eric Tulsky expressed relief at the signing, stating the Hurricanes look forward to him contributing as he did during their recent championship season.
Originally selected in the third round of the 2020 NHL draft, Nikishin remains a vital part of the team's defensive future after his role in winning the Stanley Cup this past June.
