Indian authorities detained leaders of a youth-led protest movement and their allies on Saturday and imposed sweeping restrictions in central Delhi to stop crowds from gathering for a planned demonstration against a contentious revision of voter rolls.
On Saturday, the Indian government made numerous arrests – including that of the leader of the "cafard" movement, the spearhead of the student revolt in India – to prevent the demonstration in New Delhi demanding the resignation of the President of the Electoral Commission. The UN High Commission for Human Rights called for the "immediate" release of all persons detained "arbitrarily".
