Hundreds of pests found in federal buildings as feds draft back-to-office plan
Federal unions cite pest sightings as a workplace concern amid plans to increase office presence, with 549 reports in 93 buildings from April to November.
- Public Services and Procurement Canada reported 549 pest reports in Crown-owned buildings in the National Capital Region between April 1 and Nov. 24, Sabourin said.
- A Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat document suggested boosting in-office days for non-executive and executive staff, and Prime Minister Mark Carney said earlier this month the plan will be developed with public-sector unions.
- Pests reported ranged from bats and bedbugs to bees, wasps, mice and other small insects, and a federal employee said bedbugs appeared in his office building three or four times over the past year.
- Public Services and Procurement Canada said reports are handled under integrated pest management programs and described incidents as isolated, but declined to provide a per-building breakdown due to spreadsheets and manual data compilation.
- Federal unions have repeatedly raised pest presence as a workplace concern as the government pushes public servants to spend more time in the office under the current rule since September 2024.
