Hundreds of items of ‘cultural significance’ stolen from Bristol Museum archive

  • On September 25, Avon and Somerset Police said more than 600 'high-value' artefacts were taken from a building housing Bristol Museum's British Empire and Commonwealth collection.
  • According to Bristol Museum, the British Empire and Commonwealth collection documents links between Britain and countries in the British Empire from the late 19th century to recent times.
  • A group of four unknown males broke into the building on Cumberland Road, Bristol, where police say items were stolen between 1am and 2am; Avon and Somerset Police have released CCTV footage and are seeking to speak to four people.
  • Given many items were donations, DC Dan Burgan emphasised the theft is a major cultural loss, noting the stolen items carry significant cultural value for the city of Bristol.
  • Enquiries have included significant CCTV enquiries, forensic investigations and liaison with victims, and Avon and Somerset Police asked the public to call 101 quoting reference 5225269603.
