Hundreds of beagles rescued from breeding facility being rehomed
On Tuesday, more than 200 beagles from a Wisconsin biomedical research facility arrived at Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Palm Beach County, Florida, experiencing grass and freedom for the first time.
Ridglan Farms, a biomedical research breeding facility in Dane County, Wisconsin, surrendered its state breeding license to avoid potential felony animal mistreatment charges, though the facility denies mistreating animals.
Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy negotiated a confidential agreement to purchase 1,500 of the 2,000 dogs for an undisclosed price, facilitating the large-scale relocation effort.
Evan Nader of Big Dog Ranch Rescue said the beagles are receiving medical care and will be ready for adoption in about three weeks, requiring time and compassionate foster homes.
Rescue partners nationwide, including the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and the Animal Humane Society, are accepting the remaining dogs and seeking donations to support the transition.
