At Least 21 Dead After Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Malaysia
At least 21 migrants died after a boat carrying Rohingya refugees capsized near Langkawi island, with 13 survivors rescued amid ongoing search efforts, UNHCR said.
- A boat capsized off Langkawi on Thursday, with rescuers recovering seven bodies and saving 13 survivors, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency said.
- Departing from Buthidaung, the migrants were fleeing Rakhine's violence amid ethnic targeting of the Rohingya community, with about 1.3 million now living as refugees in Bangladesh camps after the 2017 crackdown.
- Officials found migrants transferred from a large mothership into three smaller boats, each holding around 100 people, while human trafficking syndicates charge up to $3500 per person.
- MMEA first admiral Romli Mustafa warned there is a possibility that more victims will be found as at least 12 vessels searched an area of around 250 square nautical miles; operations resume Tuesday.
- UNHCR data show around 5,200 Rohingya have attempted sea crossings since the start of the year, with 657 deaths in 2024, amid Malaysia's push-back record complicating rescue efforts.
