Hundreds Evacuated as Waves Batter New Zealand Capital
On Tuesday, Wellington Mayor Andrew Little declared a state of emergency as authorities evacuated hundreds of residents from seaside homes threatened by 11-metre waves battering the capital's southern coast.
Gale-Force winds reaching up to 128km/h and waves rising to 9 meters along Wellington's southern coast prompted the weather bureau warnings, causing tree damage and road closures throughout the region.
Ferry services between New Zealand's North and South Islands were suspended, while a Golden Bay Air light aircraft tipped onto its side at Wellington Airport when strong winds struck shortly after landing.
Little warned, "You must stay away from the southern coastline," cautioning that emergency workers would not assist those remaining behind while police established road cordons to prevent coastal access.
The Wellington City Council warned, "We are now entering the forecast period for most significant swell impacts," advising residents in evacuation zones to shelter in place as conditions persist.
