Hundreds Arrested in Domestic Violence Blitz
Police seized 94 guns and laid 2,063 charges during the four-day blitz targeting offenders with a history of domestic violence.
From Wednesday to Saturday, NSW Police arrested 993 people and laid 2063 charges during Operation Amarok XIII, a statewide blitz targeting individuals with a history of domestic violence.
Officers conducted 14,318 apprehended domestic violence order compliance checks, identifying 391 breaches while seizing 94 firearms and 48 other weapons during the operation.
Police Minister Yasmin Catley called domestic violence a "stain on our society," while arrests included a 28-year-old Fairfield man charged over a stabbing and a 51-year-old man accused of intentionally choking a person.
Criminology lecturer Rachael Burgin labeled the operation a "political gimmick" and alleged police were slow to act, but NSW Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Adam Johnson rejected the criticism, stating "we can't arrest our way out of this."
Domestic violence accounts for around 60 per cent of police time, contributing to a record-high number of people in state prisons, with 41 per cent of the increase in remand prisoners attributed to domestic violence.
