Humpback calf seen with deep gash after reported ferry strike off Vancouver

  • On Friday, Hullo Ferries said one of its high-speed vessels likely struck a humpback whale near Vancouver in English Bay.
  • On Monday the calf was seen swimming with its mother BCX1193 Zig Zag a few kilometres from the reported collision site, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans said Hullo Ferries informed them after the contact.
  • Photographs show a deep slice at the base of the calf's dorsal fin, captured by naturalists Sara Jenkins with Wild Whales Vancouver and Julia Adelsheim, and shared by the Pacific Whale Watch Association.
  • Vancouver Island Ferry Company said Spuhels likely made contact with a whale and the bridge team immediately initiated evasive action and a crash stop, while DFO said the calf's survival is uncertain and healing must be monitored.
  • Of her four calves, three have been injured and one is potentially missing, with a 2021 vessel strike and a 2019 entanglement noted, experts said increased vigilance by boaters can help prevent strikes.
