More Human Remains Found Near Former Barrie, Ont., Homeless Encampment Site
Police are examining the remains to determine whether they are linked to two homicides from last summer.
- On Thursday, the Barrie Police Service discovered human remains near Dyment Creek at the intersection of Anne Street South and Tiffin Street. Investigators are working to determine the nature of the remains.
- The site sits steps from the former Victoria Street encampment, which housed approximately 100 people before police evacuated and fenced it during a major homicide investigation last summer. Nearly one year ago, the encampment became the center of a significant police investigation.
- Sargeant Matt Abofs with Barrie Police said it is "inappropriate" to speculate on details at this early stage. The remains are being sent to the Center of Forensic Sciences for identification.
- Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall called the discovery "understandably concerning" given its proximity to last year's deaths. The OPP Urban Containment Rescue Team is assisting police in searching for additional evidence in nearby water.
- While police acknowledged the site's history, officers are treating this discovery as a separate incident for now. Barrie Police will remain on-scene until the search is complete, with further updates expected as investigation progresses.
