Giant tunnel proposed to clean up Windermere's sewage problem
The proposal would connect 12,800 people to the sewer network and could add up to £3.17 a month to United Utilities customers’ bills.
A coalition including United Utilities and environmental campaigners unveiled a feasibility report proposing a £3.6 billion tunnel to eliminate sewage discharges into Windermere, described as a "100 year solution" for the lake.
Nutrient-Rich wastewater has triggered green algal blooms in the lake, threatening the Unesco World Heritage site that attracts 18 million visitors annually to the Lake District.
Construction of a 12-mile tunnel would connect 12,800 people to the network for the first time, with the £3.7 billion investment projected to generate around £7.5 billion in total benefits.
Two discharge routes into the River Leven or Irish Sea are being considered, with funding options potentially increasing customer bills by £3.17 monthly or 35p nationally across England.
Government approval is now required to advance the scheme, though environmental activist Matt Staniek cautioned the report remains a "plan on a piece of paper" rather than definitive action.
