Amber warning issued as Storm Austen threatens UK with strong winds and heavy rain
The second-highest Met Office warning covers Cornwall, Devon and Plymouth as heavy rain and travel disruption are also expected.
The Met Office issued an amber weather warning for Storm Austen on Wednesday, projecting 80mph gusts across Cornwall, Devon, the Isles of Scilly, and Plymouth on Friday from 3am until 10pm.
As the season's first named storm, Austen was selected from over 40,000 public suggestions submitted to the Met Office. The alphabetical naming system runs from September to August, tracking significant weather events across Britain annually.
Forecasters warn of potential danger to life from large waves and flying debris, alongside possible power cuts and bridge closures. Road, rail, air, and ferry services face potential cancellations, creating widespread travel disruption.
Residents within the amber zone should remain indoors as much as possible while the strongest winds pass. Authorities advise securing loose items like bins and trampolines, and avoiding shelter near trees or buildings.
While south-west England remains the primary focus, the storm's exact trajectory remains uncertain. The Met Office assigned a 50-75 per cent likelihood of significant impacts, as shifting models could expose Wales and southern England to damaging gales.
