The Fatah Party Elects New Central Committee for the First Time in 10 Years
Delegates are expected to choose 18 Central Committee members and 80 Revolutionary Council members as Fatah seeks renewal and unity during the Gaza war.
On Thursday, the Palestinian National Liberation Movement launched its eighth general conference across the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, and Egypt, involving approximately 2,580 members seeking organizational renewal amid Israel's war on Gaza.
Fatah faces mounting questions about succession to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, with delegates set to elect 18 representatives to the Central Committee and 80 to the Revolutionary Council by Sunday.
Senior Fatah official Sabri Saidam argued the gathering represents an attempt to 'rebuild the movement at a critical moment for the Palestinian cause,' yet many Palestinians in Gaza feel abandoned, viewing political discussions as disconnected from survival.
Key leader Nasser al-Qudwa boycotted the conference, declaring it 'illegitimate' and claiming the leadership has 'usurped power,' while Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called for a two-state solution in a video message.
Political analyst Ibrahim Abrash warned that without genuine renewal, the movement risks becoming a 'bureaucratic organisation disconnected from the spirit of national liberation,' with success requiring a real vision to end division.
