Zanskar Geothermal & Minerals used AI to find a 250°F blind geothermal reservoir, the first in 30 years, unlocking potential for hundreds of new clean energy sites, experts say.
- Last week, Utah-headquartered Zanskar Geothermal & Minerals announced it used artificial intelligence to locate a 250-degree Fahrenheit geothermal reservoir named Big Blind, a site with no surface signs.
- Human limits in combining multiple indicators meant AI models trained by Zanskar on known blind systems and rock data were needed after the mid-1980s industry pullback.
- They drilled wells to around 2,700 feet and encountered porous rock that confirmed a subsurface reserve, with the site large enough to support a power plant but its full extent unknown.
- Carl Hoiland, co-founder and CEO of Zanskar, said it is the first industry-discovered blind site in more than three decades, and the company estimates first electricity in three to five years while navigating permitting and grid interconnection.
- If replicable, experts say the discovery could scale to many tens or hundreds of gigawatts, with a 2008 government analysis estimating around 30 gigawatts could power 25 million homes.
