Red Notice Subject Accused of Sexual Assault Extradited From UAE: CBI
Interpol helped trace and arrest the accused, and a chargesheet with medical and forensic support has already been filed, officials said.
- On Wednesday, the Central Bureau of Investigation brought Sajeer Palli Mooppam to New Delhi from the United Arab Emirates to face sexual assault charges. A Delhi Police escort team took custody of the suspect following his extradition.
- Delhi Police initiated the search after a sexual assault case was filed against Mooppam involving a 20-year-old woman. Acting on this request, the CBI secured an Interpol Red Notice, enabling authorities to geolocate and arrest the fugitive in the UAE.
- Investigators allege Mooppam and an accomplice incapacitated the victim with an intoxicating substance before transporting her to a hotel. The accused fraudulently checked in using third-party identity credentials, and the CBI stated forensic reports corroborated the assault allegations.
- A chargesheet has already been filed before the competent court, a CBI spokesperson said. The suspect now faces legal proceedings in India after UAE authorities completed formalities and transferred him to the Delhi Police escort team.
- The CBI has successfully brought back more than 278 wanted criminals to India since 2019 through foreign law enforcement coordination. This extradition reflects the agency's ongoing commitment to securing the return of fugitives from abroad.
